E-Waste EPR Registration in India: A Step-by-Step Guide
6 May 2026
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) makes the companies that put electronics into the Indian market responsible for managing those products at end of life. If you manufacture, import or sell electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) under your own brand, E-Waste EPR registration with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) is mandatory — not optional.
Who needs E-Waste EPR registration?
- Manufacturers of electrical & electronic equipment
- Importers of EEE, components or assemblies
- Brand owners who sell EEE under their own label
- Producers introducing notified products into the market
Which rules apply?
E-Waste EPR is governed by the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, which moved compliance onto a fully online CPCB EPR portal and introduced an EPR-certificate / credit mechanism. Producers are assigned annual collection and recycling targets based on the quantity they place on the market.
The registration process, step by step
- Register your entity on the CPCB EPR portal
- Calculate your EPR targets from sales / import data
- Build a collection and take-back plan
- Tie up with authorised recyclers to meet targets
- File accurate annual returns and reconcile certificates
Documents you'll need
- GST certificate
- IEC (Import Export Code) for importers
- Product catalogue with EEE categories
- Manufacturing or import invoices / sales data
How long does it take?
A complete, correctly documented application is typically processed in about 45–60 days. The delays we see almost always come from incomplete documentation or mis-categorised products — which a pre-submission review eliminates.
What happens if you don't register?
Operating without EPR registration, or dealing with unauthorised parties, can attract environmental compensation under the Environment (Protection) Act and restrictions on your ability to sell. For most businesses, the cost of compliance is a small fraction of the cost of a default.
GreenLoop Solutions handles E-Waste EPR end to end — registration, target calculation, recycler tie-ups and annual returns. If you're unsure whether you're covered, talk to us for a quick assessment.
